As a mother and counsellor, I have observed that most Nigerian homes have an ideology of engaging house helps as slaves and not as employees. I am sure that if there is a government policy that dictates their engagement, a lot will change in the treatment and that will take care of issues such as minors being engaged to work etc.

Slavery: The state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune.

Employees: An individual who works under a contact of agreement, and has recognized rights and duties, also called worker.‎

Thoughts
How did you treat your past house helps and even the ones in your home now. As a slave or an employee?
Do your children understand that your house help is their helper and not their subject?

How to handle your housemaid

What is your motive for employment?
– Is it because you need her/him to do what you cannot do?
– Or to assist you in doing what you can do?
– Or to help your children do what they can or cannot do?

Once you can answer the questions, the next thing is assessment.
– Find out where they are coming from.
– Their past experiences i.e. job, any case of abuse etc
– Medical Test. A lady who employed a help and did not carry out a test found out after a month that she had hepatitis…How did she find out?

All house helps need RE-training to fit into the culture and values of your home,  do not expect a miracle. A lot of people might not realise it but what is applicable in one house is a taboo in another.

It is when they do not perform to your expectations that abuse (physical, verbal etc) usually sets in.

Thoughts.
Do you know the kind of specific questions to ask before employment?
