Here are some foods to avoid during pregnancy:

Smoked seafood

Do not take smoked and refrigerated seafood, as they contain Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. These bacteria cause listeriosis (associated with symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting) that could lead to illness in newborn and even miscarriage or stillbirth. Moreover, processed seafood contains high levels of salt which can lead to increased blood pressure and swelling of the body parts.

Raw shellfish
Avoid eating raw shellfish such as oysters, clams, and mussels to stay away from seafood-borne illnesses and food poisoning. They contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins that can harm both mother and child.

Raw or undercooked eggs
You should not eat raw, undercooked, or soft-boiled eggs as they contain harmful salmonella bacteria which causes food poisoning that weakens your immune system and which may impact the baby’s development.

Raw meat and poultry
having undercooked/raw meat and poultry, such as raw meat that is bloody, can cause toxoplasmosis as it contains Toxoplasma parasite and can lead to miscarriage or fetal death during delivery.
Undercooked meat also contains harmful bacteria salmonella, which increases the risk of food poisoning.

Unwashed fruits and vegetables
unwashed fruits and veggies carry Toxoplasma parasite that harms the developing baby. Toxoplasmosis contaminates the soil where fruits and vegetables are grown and you may ingest the harmful microbes if you eat them unwashed

Excess caffeine:

High amounts of caffeine could increase your chances of miscarriage and low birth weight babies. Some research studies reveal that caffeine is associated with premature birth. Other drinks to avoid during pregnancy are soft during, diet soda, alcohol and iced tea.

Sugar-rich foods:

Cut down on sugar-rich foods such as dessert, candies, cakes, ice creams, chocolates and sweetened beverages because they worsen pregnancy discomforts (Nausea, vomiting, constipation and heartburn) increase overweight, contribute to gestational diabetes and increase the risk of metabolic syndrome in babies.

Fatty foods:

Avoids trans-fats including fast-foods, processed food, margarine etc. because it increases your chances of having a big baby.

Unpasteurized milk:

It is unsafe to drink unpasteurized or raw milk during pregnancy. It has no nutritional advantages and raw milk and its products account for a higher proportion of foodborne diseases.

Soft cheese

Do not eat soft cheese it contains listeria – cheese is likely to harbour any bacteria.

Pate:

Whether it’s made from meat, fish or vegetables, May contains higher levels of listeria bacteria than other foods. In pregnancy, you are much more susceptible to listeriosis, a type of foods poisoning because of your body’s natural defences against such are weaker in pregnancy.
