Honey can carry harmful bacteria known as clostridium botulinum. This can produce toxins in your baby’s intestines, leading to infant botulism, muscle paralysis and other serious illnesses. Use pureed fruit to sweeten your baby’s food instead. Avoid honey until 1 year old.
❎Salt and Stock cubes
Salt can damage your baby’s kidneys. Your baby’s kidneys cannot cope with more than 0.4g of salt per day. Therefore, avoid adding any salt to your baby’s food. Stock cubes are also very high in salt, please avoid them as well. If your baby is eating the same meal as the rest of the family, try and remove a cooked portion for your baby before seasoning the food for the rest of the family.
Sugar can damage your baby’s teeth. Your baby doesn’t need sugar. Avoid giving sugary snacks or sugary drinks (including fruit juice, soft drinks or chocolate drinks).
For the first year of life, babies should only take breast milk or formula. Babies cannot digest cow’s milk as easily as they can digest infant formula. Cow’s milk contains high concentrations of proteins and minerals which can stress your baby’s immature kidneys, and cause severe illnesses in times of heat stress, fever or diarrhoea. Again, cow’s milk doesn’t contain the healthiest types of fat for growing babies. It also lacks the proper amounts of iron, vitamin C, and other nutrients that infants need. It may even cause iron-deficiency anaemia in some babies, since cow’s milk protein can irritate the lining of the stomach and intestine, leading to loss of blood into the stools. Babies under 1 year shouldn’t take cow’s milk as a drink, but little can be used to mix their cereal.
This poses a risk of choking in children under the age of 5. Nuts should be finely chopped to prevent choking. Avoid giving nuts if there’s a history of food allergy in the family.
❎Fish high in mercury
High mercury fish such as shark, marlin, swordfish, mackerel, tuna, etc should be avoided. The amount of mercury in them can affect the development of your baby’s nervous system. Avoid until 16 years old.
