Here are ways to keep children healthy during the raining season, Everybody welcomes the rainy season as it provides the much needed cool relief after the dry, sticky hot summer. However, the rains also bring dampness weather, flooded roads, mosquitoes, diseases, dirty and unhygienic environments and a lot of other unhealthy attributes.  It’s usually the children who suffer the most during the rainy season with lack of outdoor play, outings, and the usual illnesses.  By keeping in mind the following tips, you can help keep your children healthy during the rainy season.

Improve their immune system

As the weather is wet and cold, the damp environment could lead to flu, runny nose, cough, diarrhoea and other respiratory illness. So it’s important to help improve their immune system by ensuring your children’s daily diet include food rich in all vitamins, especially vitamin C. Though vitamin supplements are good, it’s always better to take in vitamins directly from fruits & vegetables.

Maintaining good hygiene 

Maintain good hygiene by observing the cleanliness is very important for example: cutting the children’s nails regularly, giving them baths at least once a day, regular washing of their hands and feet after they come back from school or play.  And just as important, to ensure food is handled properly both during preparations (such as washing fruits and vegetables properly, using clean chopping boards, fresh fish and meat are kept refrigerated until it’s ready to be cooked, etc.) and make sure leftovers or cooked food is not left lying on bench or table tops for more than 3-4 hours without being eaten.  With the higher humidity in the air, mould, mildew, germs, bacteria, etc., grow and develop faster than in more dry environments.

Eat warm and healthy food

To avoid potential health risks associated with extremely cold weather especially in this season, eat at least one hot meal a day to help regulate body temperature. Hearty meals that contain healthy carbs and fats can help warm you up more from the inside-out. You’ll find recipes here. Try soups, spicy foods to fend off the chill! Regularly drinking warm drinks will help too. Tea serves them well during cold rainy weather. However, most children’s immune system is not at all fully developed so extra precautions are necessary.  Strictly preventing your children from eating outside food is the best way to prevent digestion related illnesses. Enjoying home-made food is the safest option during the rainy season.

Keep them hydrated.

Although your children may not be sweating as much as they do in warm-weather months, they still need to keep hydrated. Smart choices for winter are low-sugar juices that are high in vitamin C, which studies show can lessen the severity and duration of winter colds. Decaffeinated tea and hot chocolate are also wise picks — these comforting hot drinks are a great source of antioxidants, which are believed to strengthen the immune system.

 

Stay safe from mosquitoes 

Mosquitos are infamous in every tropical country, and Myanmar is no exception.  It is important to note and we all need to be reminded about “Dengue causing mosquitoes to breed in still water”. So it’s really important to cover water containers or pour out access water from all forms of water containers inside and around the house to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in them.  Maintaining a tidy environment inside and around the house is also essential for creating a dengue-free area for children.

It’s recommended to use mosquito nets sleeping at night, and or mosquito repellent when your children need to go out during the day and or evenings.

Choose suitable clothes & footwear 

During the rainy season, the weather cannot be predicted. It can be hot at the start of the day and temperature can turn suddenly too much cooler temperatures with the rain.  To be safe, ensure your children have extra sets of clothing to change into for when they go out (it’s more likely than not that they will get wet); and bring a light cardigan for your child for when the weather turns suddenly or when coming from outside into an air-conditioned environment.  It’s important to make sure they wear dry or ironed clothes as moist clothing can host and grow mould which can irritate their skin, making it itchy, or lead to other skin problems for the children.

Keep Umbrella and raincoat for them

This will be necessary if you are going out with your children or they come back up from school with on thier own.  The umbrellas or raincoat will help you their movement even when it seems to be raining heavily. Also, keep several umbrellas in your car. It is one of the easiest ways to be ready when stepping out with your children into the rain. You can have mini umbrellas in your child(ren)’s bag or foldable raincoats (they come in cute cartoon designs nowadays).
