The Chairman of First Bank Nigeria Ltd, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika charged women to become assets at the one year anniversary of FirstGem on the 5th of December 2017.

She spoke at the anniversary about the importance of women in building the economy of a nation, she mentioned that women are faced with a lot of challenges.

Mrs. Awosika said: “Every woman in Nigeria is a major asset, women in particular across various cultures within our country fall into different situations.

The Lagos woman is privileged, the women in some of the cities too, you are privileged because you have opportunities, but even within those cities there are many cultural holes and in reality, life may not favour us and when life comes into every home, the women, the children, and even the men will suffer.

Every time the economy is troubled and people lose jobs or businesses go down and women do not form support strength for their households because all the dependency is on the men, the whole household suffers.”

Mrs. Awosika while addressing the women told them that being single or married should not hinder them from creating personal wealth.

She added: “I have been married for the past 27 years and I intend to be married until the last day of my life. My biggest successes in life has been as a wife in my husband’s home which means that being married or single should not be a factor that affects your ability to create personal wealth; It’s about your mindset, your commitment to the goal, the course to work in the interest of your family when you are personally and financially capable.

If your husband gets into trouble, he can have hope because he knows that you are someone that he can fall back on. When there is trouble, your children do not have to suffer because you can add value to the progress of your home.

In my mind it is always about the family having, whatever your religion is, the husband and the wife are one, if two become one, it really doesn’t matter what part of the one is able to meet the family’s needs when there is a need, there is a bigger challenge when one side is left to do it so that in the day of trouble, there is no support from the other side.”

She encouraged the women to make use of their abilities against all odds, She said: “You need to learn how to use your own asset to create greater value. A lot of women want to do but don’t have the discipline to, we are consumed with the looks and the appearances, I don’t care about your friends and if they laugh at you that you don’t have the newest designer, I don’t care if they think you’ve worn one dress too often, I don’t care about the many things that don’t count because life is about stages and seasons and it is about the individual getting it right, having the courage to face the public and standing your ground within every season of your life.

Everything in life has its time and its season. It is very important that you focus on a particular thing in a season to establish yourself and to prove your hands. Bill Gates has three hundred streams of income but he is known with Microsoft.

There is a need for you to build yourself, if you are a career person then build a track record of holding a job for a period of time or for a sustained time but when you are building your personal business; it’s about you making a decision about what you want to be known for.”

Mrs. Ibukun Awosika also mentioned that empowering the women and educating mothers will have a positive effect on their children.

She said: “When you empower the women and teach the mothers, all the children will learn from it because our children learn from what we do more than what we say.

Finally, Mrs. Awosika charged the women to become assets to their husbands. She said: “The time and the age we are in; no man can support his family by himself. It takes a lot to send a child to the right school. For you to earn respect in your household, you must be an asset.”
