Meet our Mumpreneur of week – TOUN LAWAL

Motherhood Nigeria is glad to present to you our Mumpreneur of this season, We believed her story would inspire and motivate someone. She is a creative visual artist as a child set designer and photographer who composes inspiring milestone documentary. Please meet the Creative director of Buckles Memoirs Nigeria:

My name is Toun Lawal and I run Buckles Memoirs Nigeria, a milestone documentary company and withing it is the Childs themed Photography. We believe the greatest gifts in life are learnt via reflections of our past experience so what we do at Buckles is to design your child’s photo shoot set from scratch, capture the nest of their expressions which we would use in interpreting your family values and experience over time. This becomes a tool for reflection because it’s filled with values that would keep this child going and inspire the child tomorrow.

WHAT INSPIRE YOU TO START THIS BUSINESS?

My motherhood journey. The acceptance of the new me and the reality ahead. So I started with my first Child Safiyyah

FROM HAVING AN IDEA TO STARTING YOUR BUSINESS, SHARE YOUR JOURNEY WITH US?

It’s been one full of struggles, failing and picking up myself knowing that you never stop seeking for knowledge as long as you a living and You would be criticized which would help you be great.

I planned events for 9 years and ran with all my lessons into the Child Photography industry bringing in with me the milestone documentary.

The only thing stopping you from achieving your goals is you. Honestly.

GREAT IDEAS DON’T ALWAYS MEAN GREAT SALES, HOW HAS IT BEEN MARKETING YOUR SERVICES?

Getting better at my job. The more you get better, selling the value you bring on board the more sales you make.

WHY DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO? THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER BUSINESSES YOU COULD HAVE EXPLORED, WHY THIS BUSINESS?

Hmmm that’s a deep one for me but I have always been hands-on from childhood, then I understand the importance of positive affirmations at an early age, I cherish family values as I believe there has been an evolution of the family structure reason why all children must understand their origin, experience as a family and live an inspired life.

DID YOU  DISCOVER NEW THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF IN THE COURSE OF STARTING AND RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS?

Yes, i did. I was never going to capture children. The idea was to be doing the milestone composition inspiring the kids by interpreting their pictures, however I realised the pictures that would carry a thousand words might not have to mean to someone external so they could just delete and this forced me to start capturing children and alas I was great at composition of images something that has to be learnt. It all came from me being a great set designer.  Did I tell you I do home interiors at some point?yes I did

HOW DID YOU RAISE THE CAPITAL TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

I don’t spend anyhow. If it’s not meaningful you would not find me doing it. It has to be bringing value to my life so yes I had savings and I packed it all.

WHEN YOU STARTED THIS BUSINESS, DO YOU ENJOY SUPPORT FROM OTHER FEMALES?

Absolutely.

HOW ARE YOU BEING ABLE TO TRANSLATE FROM PAID EMPLOYMENT TO STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

The difference between both is you have things done for you on a platter of gold as a paid employee but as a business owner even the printer in the office you would buy. Does it give you more time? NO, you work much more as a business owner.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF HAVING A MENTOR IN BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES?

I have not found one but I have friends who have done business for over 15 years. I think basically I am just working on my own mistakes and learning from the ones my friends make and keep learning through books. Would.i want to have a mentor? Absolutely if it is wearing a pure and sincere heart. I would meet him or her someday

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED AS A YOUNG BUSINESS WOMAN AND MOTHER?

Challenges to me are part of living. So I don’t dwell on it. Everything is all about attitude. Somebody might be frustrated with traffic but for me, it’s when I catch up with a movie or finish up a book or something. For my children, it’s all planning. Nothing is more important than them so I don’t work when they are stranded. We are together. So if I am working its either they are in school or their Madrasah.
